Ancient Egyptians use the loincloth underpants called schenti. They are made of woven material, commonly cotton and flax and held by belts. The schenti was often ‘outwear’ because the lower classes and slaves were naked at that time.
In the middle ages in Europe the underwear is made of linen or cotton cloth for men and women. The fashion again returned during the 15th and 16th century. A padded codpiece was to protect the genitals. And also served to enhance rather than conceal the genital area or the symbol of sexual energy.

In the 19th century the bifurcated drawers with separate leg that was knee length trouser was in use. It was especially design to look manageable under several layers of petticoats or breeches. In the mid to late 19th century the closed crochet was in demand. The elastic qualities of knit garment allow the body to breathe, to disperse bodily poisons and also to promote exercise.
After the First World War, when women started labor the silhouette of outwear such as boiler suits and loose trousers paved the way for knickers. In 1930, latex or rubber yarn was introduce. These evolved to the synthetic nylon fiber which is light-weight and easy to launder. For men a manmade fiber called Lycra was invent, which was elastomeric, stretchable, and strong and combined with cotton or nylon. Then thong or G-string which is hard to define underpants is chiefly popular.

With advancements in technology the underpants are style with haptic communication. Wearable-X a NY-based company has manufacture the underwear called as Fundawear which can transfer the ‘vibrating touch’ signal through smartphone app. Some brands have developed the reusable underpants for menstruating women or experiencing incontinence. The medical underwears to provide infection control and wound care, for postoperative and postnatal patients are also available.
